I just heard today that the old Compuserve network has been shuttered. If you've been using the Internet for a while, you may remember me by my previous email address: 76424.1345@compuserve.com. But probably not.
Here's the post that made me think of this. The Compuserve service was the first big computer network, and was very innovative with features like being able to send email to someone who was NOT using the same service. Doesn't seem like a big deal today, does it. But in the 1980s it was a breakthrough.
At any rate, the demise of Compuserve at the hands of its owner, AOL is likely to have no effect on anyone other than to evoke 'the old days'. Ahhh yes, my VIC-20 hooked up to a cassette recorder, a 300 baud modem, and a 12" color TV. Yep... those were the days!
